The Exorcist is the second song of a limited collection I’ll be creating using Grimes’ AI voice replicating software. It comes from an experience of an actual exorcism that was performed on me. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work. I was raised by really strict parents in a cult like Christian community. They took the Bible very literally and interpreted mental health struggles as demonic possession. One night after a Bible study, a small church group decided to perform an exorcism on me without my knowledge. What began as a typical prayer circle around me quickly spiraled into chaos. The pastor leading the prayer was holding my head, jumping up and down and shouting at the demons within me to speak and release their hold. Instead of being terrorized, I found the situation comical. Instead of demons pouring out of me I let out a nervous giggle. Looking back, I recognize the trauma of that night, but I've discovered healing through my music. This song is my narrative of resilience, a testament to how, if my struggles are demons, they've already revealed themselves through my art. In sharing my story, they've spoken and, in turn, released and liberated me from their grasp.
