The next single from “Music Inspired by BIONICLE: Vol. II” is here! This time, we’re diving into the synthwave-inspired rock epic, "Doomsday". I originally wrote and recorded this song back in 2016, during the sessions of my fourth album “IV”. It was based on an acapella by singer-songwriter NewShoes, titled “S T R M”. For this new version, I decided to take a different direction, not only with new lyrics, but also by transforming it from an EDM-style track into a synthwave/metal hybrid. The lyrics were penned by the Swiss lyricist Elizabeth Auzan, who quickly envisioned the direction for the song. After having heard other songs where she’s provided lyrical work, I was confident her style would be a perfect fit, and I’m glad to say I was right. In fact, I’d go even further to say that it’s probably some of the better lyrical work on the record as a whole. In terms of the BIONICLE-lore, I’d like to believe the song could fit somewhere prior or during the Great Cataclysm, when the Great Spirit Mata Nui was put into a deep sleep by the Makuta, causing a major earthquake throughout the Matoran Universe. I think that’s what makes “Doomsday” vastly different from other songs on the record, as it’s completely open to interpretation. Stylistically, I aimed to blend alternative metal and synth-pop, using more synths and electronic percussion instead of acoustic instruments. The Swedish band Smash Into Pieces, as well as the Norwegian hitmakers A-ha specifically come to mind as significant inspirations for this sound. Aside from my contributions on synths and electronic drums, guitars were done by two fantastic musicians in the own right, Mitch Brody and Jim Lawlor. Both proved to have a very adaptive and versatile way of collaborating, which only proved to be a major asset. Lastly, Mike Ousey’s vocal work on this song are outstanding. He stepped in at a time where I was struggling to find a suitable singer for the song, and I’m so grateful he did. The efforts of these three musicians truly brought the song to life, and I deeply appreciate their time and dedication. You should be seeing “Doomsday” come out on streaming services as early as this week, but before that… “Music Inspired by BIONICLE: The Listening Party” is just around the corner. It will be broadcast live this Sunday at 6:30 PM EDT, during the second day of the 810NICLE Day-event. I won’t reveal too much, but what I can say is this; You should expect a few surprises during and after the event. Until then, may love and peace be with you all!
