As a software engineer (IRL) the concept of /dev/null was always interesting to me. A virtual blackhole you could send anything to where whatever data was sent to it ceased to exist. Earlier in life I had always wished there was an equivalent where we could send our past failings, hurt and betrayals to a /dev/null to have them disappear from us forever. Only if we could “control” the hurt that happens in our lives. Fortunately, we have been given something similar…forgiveness. Forgiveness for ourselves and others in Christ where we can lay everything at His feet and walk away renewed. Let’s talk production. I wanted to create something rough and raw but still show a level of refinement. The breakbeat is a jungle break that was slowed down and chopped up to give various rhythmic feels. The simple bass is provided by a Neutron bass synthesizer with a single oscillator with the LFO rate at minimum to sustain. Diva for pads. The detuned French horn during the Chorus is courtesy of the Dawesome KULT put through distortion. The mid-tone bells during the bridge were also put through tape distortion. The guitar was played live with a Fender Strat captured through a mic’d Fender Blues Deluxe using a modified rotary from Eventide’s H90 effects pedal. The guitar tuning was in drop-D. The mic used was a BeyerDynamic M88 into a Neve1272 followed by an 1176 compressor. Produced, mixed and mastered by agablis.
