Amber was the product of fully letting go and trusting the process. I had a session with my friends Zach Ezzy and Cautious Clay one night, and we really eased into it (actual work began 3 hours in after getting tacos and shooting the shit). I had recorded a syncopated drum pattern in my car earlier that day, so we pulled that up and started building sound around it. Zach and Cautious eventually played tandem flute and trumpet over it! We made that into a sample, made it even, and put some paced drums over it. I had been wanting to write a song about how after breaking up with friends or partners we leave a piece of ourselves behind like a fossil or a mosquito trapped in amber, and that night just felt like the right time to flesh it out. For a long time I've gone into sessions thinking that I have to make the best song in the world, all the while forgetting that music is supposed to be fun. This song embodies that release and reconnection with the process of making music for fun. I'm so grateful that moment was immortalized in this song.
