The Demo Days: On a Comeup (March 9th, 2019) All the beats David, the producer of the record, sent me in that pack were fire, but this one stood out to me immediately. It sounded like a sunset in August. At the time, David and I were working together pretty frequently. I’d drive down to his place in Hawthorne, like an hour away. We’d do a 4-5 hour session, and then I’d drive an hour back, straight to the bar I worked at for the night shift. It was music all day and the bar all night. I had been in LA for a little over a year and was in the heart of the grind, so I wrote a song about it. There’s actually an original version, where the verses have different, more melodic lyrics. There was a pretty awesome alternative post chorus on that as well. It didn’t matter though, the song needed bars, so this version was born. It’s odd listening back to it. The first thing that strikes me is “kid”. I was 26 then, and it felt fitting to call myself a kid. Now, not so much. I also feel bad for that Joe in a way. The whole song feels like it’s written by a kid nearing the end of the comeup, as if all it would take is one more push for the problems to melt away. Just a little more grinding. Little did he know.
