“This was actually originally written for the Netflix “Spy Ops” show during the “remote times” of the pandemic, but did not make it into the show (other scores did which I may release as a side project soon). Even though what the show called for was very different from what I have previously done as a composer, a lot of the music I submitted was low-key similar compositionally to where my head was at for the trio for some time - I was trying to sneak jazz into a spy TV show haha. This song is built around a funky variation on the infectious Chaabi groove from Morocco / Algeria, and lately we’ve been opening live shows with this one. I love West African music and Chaabi music is interesting to me because it seems to have started around the same time as jazz - it’s a newer genre - and the various grooves which could be considered Chaabi are some of the trickiest to improvise over in my opinion. I’m always seeking to challenge myself.”
