Written, performed, and produced by Sara Phillips, “Angel City” shows versatility and range from the LA-based, Montreal-born singer-songwriter known for her keen songwriting and impeccable vocals. An honest rumination on the disillusionment of romanticizing the pursuit of an artist career in Los Angeles, “Angel City” notes fair weather friends, vapid parties, FOMO and other soul-killing agents as causes of metaphorical death in the city of angels. A minimal, moody, synth-laden beat shows off her blossoming production skills, while her intentionally pretty and appropriately angelic vocals let her clever lyricism take center stage. “Everybody’s dying here, that’s why they call it Angel City. Everybody’s lying here, my god they make it look so pretty,” she sings, later offering the line: “All this young forever is getting old.” Sara says she actually likes LA, but struggles at times to find her boundaries within the pressures of the culture. She sings, “I’m sick of the parties but I still want to get invited.” A painfully relatable line for anyone who’s chased success in Lala land, Sara strikes a nerve. “It’s the dichotomy of being tired of it, but also wanting to still be a part of it,” says Sara. “You're still caught in the middle, not completely over it, frustrated and kind of jaded by it, but you still have this need or feel this pressure to show up because you feel like if you don't go, you're missing out, or they'll stop asking you.” ---- This is the second track from HIGH FREQUENCY Volume 2 — a compilation album curated by NOISE and the web3 music community.
