‘Grief’ expresses that moment in the life-death-rebirth cycle when we are finally ready to let go of something. That turning point when suddenly there is nothing more left to say. No more need to analyse, discuss, think about, talk about why the ending is happening. The only thing left to do is surrender to the truth of what is. To turn away from ‘the story’ of it and turn your attention on tending to yourself and your heart so that you may process, heal and, in so doing, be renewed. This song is as much a love song to ‘the dance’ as it is a song about heartbreak. For me, dance has always been a powerful form of alchemy - supporting me in transmuting the painful lessons of life into wisdom and experience. Whatever comes by way, I know that I can take it to the dance floor - whether it be a Berlin nightclub, the beautiful church where I practiced 5Rhythms movement meditation for many years, a beach in Thailand or my own bedroom - and be held by the music as I dance through my emotions back to a state of rootedness in myself. The track came through me almost fully formed in just one session. It was the first time I was experimenting with doing my own production and once I built out the beat, the melody and lyrics just flowed out as if they were already hanging in the air just waiting to be sung. I wanted to explore a darker, more experimental production than my previous works, whilst still finding a way to stay true to my signature ‘medicine music’ style. To me, this style is identified by a cyclical structure that isn’t so much verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle 8 etc, but is more about vocal parts that work alone almost like mantras but also can be layered up to create a whole soundscape of voices, allowing the listener to get lost in the parts whilst still receiving the essential message of the track. ‘Grief’ is the single from my upcoming EP ‘Odyssey’. It is the first chapter in a 4-part story of initiation onto the path of The Heart - the start of a journey that begins in the underworld and ends in the stars. The winner of the Golden Egg will have the opportunity to be a part of my songwriting process for a new track. The inspiration for the song will be led by the Golden Egg winner and they will be named in the credits.
