“Music Inspired by BIONICLE: Vol. II” has finally come out! While we anticipate it’s eventual release on streaming services, let’s dive into the remaining tracks yet to be unveiled as singles. Where better to begin than with the opening track, "Hero"? From the start, I knew that I wanted this to be the first track on the album. When All Insane Kids / Dial Zero released the original back in 2005, it quickly became synonymous with BIONICLE. However, I knew I couldn’t just make a direct cover of this song. There had to be a unique twist… While the original “Hero” fits comfortably within the alternative rock and post-grunge genres, I decided to take my version in a completely different direction. I opted for an ambient style to not only emphasize the lyrics but also to imbue the song with a stronger sense of urgency, resonating with today’s world. On both the news and social media, we are constantly bombarded with images of a world on the brink, whether it be through enviornmental disasters or armed conflict. And if one is to face this relentless exposure, every single day, it can easily lead to a sense of hopelessness. This is where the central question of “Hero” becomes profoundly relevant: “Do you know what it takes to be a hero?” Many claim to know the answer, but the truth is… very few actually do. The recording process for this track was both prolonged and fascinating. Initially, it was going to be me on synths and percussion, Essenger with a sample of the iconic “beach chant” from BIONICLE’s early years, Mitch Brody on guitars, Chad Hinton on bass, and Nigel Robinson on vocals and additional keyboards. However, as we finished the track, I couldn’t help but feel that something was missing… this is where the Le-Koro Band comes in. After being introduced to them, I reached out to see if they could contribute new vocals. The result exceeded all my expectations. Jordan Willis (Jocool1231) provided lead vocals, accompanied by Marcus Rose (Samuel9248), bluerosekatie, Kirika Aeon, and Lei Hart on backup vocals. Marcus also added more keyboards. Their contributions significantly elevated the track, and I am immensely grateful for their time and dedication. It is for this reason, this version of “Hero” will be credited solely to the Le-Koro Band, not me. To say I’m excited to work with them on future projects would be an understatement. Expect the remaining singles to be released periodically throughout this month. Until next time… love and peace be with you all!
