Shape in the Shadows

As we continue our countdown to the streaming release of “Music Inspired by BIONICLE: Vol. II,” it’s time to focus on the album’s longest track, "Shape in the Shadows". Initially conceived of as a drone piece a couple of years ago, I later decided to expand the track, transforming it into an ambient dub instrumental. There wasn’t much done in terms of arrangement, as I wanted the recording of this track to have a more organic flow, relying heavily on improvisation. But there was no question of what the theme of it would be… From the very beginning of the BIONICLE-saga, Makuta Teridax (or simply Makuta) was portrayed as a dark, menacing, and epic force to be reckoned with. The way he would always plan and calculate his way towards his goal of taking over the Matoran Universe made him both a fascinating and terrifying villain. This track was designed to capture that very essence. I chose the ambient dub style for this piece because I felt it would best convey the mystique and darkness that defines Makuta. The track also draws inspiration from IDM acts like The Orb and The Fireman. While I did most of the studio work, guitarist Jim Lawlor is also given a moment to shine, contributing some exceptional guitar work, adding a layer of depth to the track. Nigel Robinson also joined in, adding extra percussion and a spoken word sample, featuring one of Makuta’s most iconic quotes from the early years of BIONICLE. I’m grateful to both of them for helping to elevate this track.. You might also notice an extra credit on this track: “Special thanks to Leyland Kirby.” There’s a meaningful reason behind that. In 2018, Kirby performed in Paris under his well-known moniker, “The Caretaker.” During the performance, he took a recording of Tino Rossi’s “Ce Soir” and distorted it to the point of being nearly unrecognizable. It was a haunting and chilling performance, one I highly recommend checking out if you’re curious. This track samples that very performance as an audible representation of the shadowy void that Makuta embodies. It was a bold move, but I’m pleased to say it paid off. And with that, there is only one track left, which should be available next week, as “Music Inspired by BIONICLE: Vol. II” will finally be released on streaming services. Until then, may love and peace be with you all!
