Uncle Becky is the latest band I've started and is the collaboration between myself and Jimmy soon after I broke up with my ex and moved into his house in the northeast part of El Paso. Honestly, I wasn't wanting to start another band. My last project, DIVINE KEGEL, seemed to be the one band I finally was in that was going to make it. We were doing official SXSW showcases and we played a main stage in a music festival. I followed my drummer to New York, but depression and wussyness overcame me and I came back to El Paso while my drummer ended up joining a band and subsequently toured the U.K. This has been on my bucketlist. I don't even have to play, the plane can go down over the Atlantic and I'd be content. Anyways, I was depressed and depressed for several reasons. I ended up going back to school and getting a master's in English lit and got back with an ex who cheated. We were living together and, well, yeah I moved in with Jimmy. I actually have a history of shitty girlfriends. This other one, I sold my car and bought a plane ticket to Alaska, because that is where she was. I'll make this quick: arrived in AK and 3 days following (the summer solstice of 2008) her ex there tried killing us by setting the apartment we were sleeping in on fire. I woke up to an inferno and the beginning scene of Cliffhanger played in my head when Stallone is hanging off with one hand from the rope. The apartment was on the second floor and I broke out the window and reenacted that scene to get my ladyfriend out. I think like 2 weeks after that she started seeing another dude, lol. In my early 20s I really liked kerouac and bukowski and decided to live on the streets, briefly. Anyways, I guessed I haven't lived the most conventional life and I guess I like to write music. Always have. A friend actually reminded me that my first band was in middle school. If you hit up my Twitter account or Instagram, you can find a link to previous bands. Unfortunately I don't have anything from Neohaste (middle school band) or my first band ban, but I got music from one of my other first projects and a couple other ones. Uncle Becky was formed in Jimmy's house and I was talking shit about the woman who played Aunt Becky from Full House because I felt she kind of destroyed a show that I grew up with. Well, in my banter I said "Uncle Becky" and Jimmy, being astute as he is inclined to be, recognized what I said and suggested the band name. The sentiment of the conversation was disgust for this woman who used her power and influence to thwart the genuine efforts of other people who are not as privileged. All the originating ideas are mine, with some songs already having an arraingment, but Jimmy helped with some arraingments, and he is also a really supportive dude, despite that one time he punched me in the face, lmao. We recorded the drums at Brainville Studios and I took most of 2023 to learn Reaper and mix and master the music. This album, for me, is a sort of ode to guitar and this track in particular is more rocky and has one of the two solos of the album. The music also comes with a short story I wrote that serves as the basis for lyrics for the track "Soft Die". The cover photo is meant to recall images of your local ghetto. Books that inspired me while creating this album range from Sartre's Nausea to Hartman's Lose Your Mother (I wish I could use italics). Frost's "The Oven Bird" was also an inspiration a long with Shelley's Frankenstein. Don't forget to check out your local library and challenge yourself with difficult texts.
